Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Kottayam
Located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Kottayam district is an ornithologist’s paradise.
Spread over 14 acres, the sanctuary owes its origin to Englishman George Alfred Baker. He developed the sanctuary on a rubber plantation. It was formerly known as Baker’s Estate. The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) currently manages the sanctuary. The KTDC Water Scapes, a premium backwater resort, shares a border with the sanctuary.
Surrounded by lush green forests, the road leading to the sanctuary is itself memorable. A cobbled path awaits us at the entry counter. The path amid thick woods, with overhanging roots, crisscrossing canals and chirping of birds is worth taking.
Coming from far-off places like the Himalayas and Nepal, migratory birds such as Siberian Stork, Egret, Darter, Heron and Teal can be spotted in the sanctuary. Local birds like waterfowl, cuckoo, owl and water hen and other common varieties such as woodpecker, skylark, crane and parrots contribute hugely to the abundant avian presence in the area.
The observatory tower at the end of the long walk is an attraction at the sanctuary. From the top, we get a beautiful view of the green canopy and numerous colourful birds dwelling at treetops in bliss and peace. A boat ride circling the boundary of the sanctuary is also a good option to explore the flora and fauna in the region. June to August and November to February are considered the best seasons to visit the sanctuary.
