Periyar Tiger Reserve, Idukki

With rolling slopes, mist-clad hills and an expanse of lush green, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Idukki district, is one of the best places in India to experience nature and wildlife in close quarters. 

Rolling slopes, mist-clad hills and an expanse of lush green is embellished by the presence of endangered species including white tigers. 

An ideal place for nature lovers and adventure junkies, the sanctuary is spread over 925 sq km and is part of the World Heritage site ‘Western Ghats’ under UNESCO. The best way to experience the pristine beauty is to hire a boat. Sambar deer can be seen in plenty and Nilgiri Thars can be spotted lazing through the grasslands. Looking up at the high branches of trees, we can spot a lion-tailed macaque or a Nilgiri langur. Not just that, the reserve is home to over 170 species of grass with many of them known for their medicinal properties. 

Periyar Tiger Reserve is also a place of immense adventure activities. The Forest Department offers a multitude of activities which will stoke the adventure spirit in you as well let you to explore the best of nature. Nature Walk, Green Walk, Bamboo Rafting, Tiger Trail, Border Hiking, Jungle Scouting and Pugmark Trail are important activities offered to tourists. Through Nature Walk and Green Walk, we get to observe birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat, feeling nature's whispers and sighs. By opting for Bamboo Rafting, we can witness a mosaic of habitats at a leisurely pace gliding past placid Periyar Lake. Tiger and pugmark trails are trekking programmes towards the deep the interiors of forest presenting you with fascinating photography opportunities. The border hiking lets you explore the undulating terrains along the borders of the tiger reserve and if you are lucky you can spot gaur, sloth bear, elephants and birds.
