Vavarambalam – The Sacred Ground of Communal Harmony

The state of Kerala is known for its remarkable communal harmony, where followers of different faiths coexist in absolute concord. One of the most famous pilgrim centres in Kerala’s Kottayam district in Central Kerala, Vavarambalam is a prominent pilgrimage destination that beautifully embodies the spirit of communal unity. This mosque serves as a place of reverence for Hindu pilgrims en route to Sabarimala, one of the world's most significant annual pilgrimage destinations. The visit to Vavarambalam is made prior to commencing the demanding trek to the Ayyappa deity. It is also known as Nainar Mosque, and a large number of devotees from different parts of the country come here during the Sabarimala pilgrimage season.

It is a common sight to see pilgrims, cutting across all religious barriers, walking around the mosque in utmost devotion, breaking coconuts and making their offerings. Legend has it that Vavar was a close companion of Lord Ayyappa, and following the slaying of the demon princess Mahishi, Ayyappa asked Vavar to stay back at Erumely. Devotees pay a visit to Vavar before they head to the Sannidhanam.

It is believed that the mosque has a history of over 500 years, and is seated between the Valiyambalam and Cheriyambalam. The Chandanakudam procession of Vavar mosque is so famous that it attracts people in droves.

This is followed by Pettathullal, the ritualistic dance performed by the devotees celebrating the victory of good over evil. Starting from Cheriyambalam, the performers proceed to Vavarambalam. Erumely Pettathullal features devotees smearing their bodies with colours and dancing their way in a celebratory mood. It is not just the devotees, even tourists come from far-off places to witness the shining example of union among the communities.
