Kerala to Showcase Onam as a Global Cultural Experience

Kerala is set to give its iconic harvest festival a stronger international flavour this year, with the state encouraging greater participation from foreign visitors during the Onam Tourism Week celebrations. The initiative aims to position Onam as a global cultural experience, inviting travellers to become active participants in one of India's most vibrant festivals.

Scheduled from August 24 to 30, 2026, the week-long celebrations will feature traditional art forms, cultural performances, exhibitions and community events across Kerala. Visitors can immerse themselves in authentic experiences such as creating colourful pookalams, enjoying the traditional Onasadya served on banana leaves, and watching performances of Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Pulikali and Thiruvathira.

Celebrated across the state, Onam marks the annual homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali and is a festival that transcends religion and region. It is a time when homes are decorated with floral carpets, families gather for festive feasts, and Kerala's rich cultural traditions take centre stage.

The enhanced focus on international participation reflects Kerala Tourism's growing emphasis on experiential travel, where visitors engage with local communities and traditions rather than simply sightseeing.
