KOCHI: Kerala plans to develop the Muziris Heritage Project into an international heritage tourism destination, with water-based tourism returning to the region after a prolonged gap.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan inaugurated the water taxi and kayaking services at the Thattukadavu Boat Jetty in North Paravur on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The water network will be extended to Ezhikkara, Kottappuram and Azhikode, with Kodungallur, Kaipamangalam and Vypeen also being brought into the wider circuit.
The expansion will include new museums, water-sports facilities and cultural and culinary experiences, along with hospitality projects in Paravur, Kodungallur and nearby areas. The Muziris boat services, which once connected heritage sites through the region’s inland waterways, had been discontinued. Their revival is part of the government’s 100-day action plan.
Tourism and Culture Minister P.C. Vishnunadh, who presided over the function, said Muziris would be developed as a world model for heritage tourism.
The government has also announced plans to bring more boats into service and extend the water-based network to additional heritage sites in the Muziris region.
