Published in Newsletter Issue No. 86 - Oct 1 2000

Ever heard of mirrors with no refraction? No? The small village of Aranmula is world-famous for such metal mirrors, the ' Aranmula Kannadis' ( kannadi means mirror in Malayalam). The unique native technology for this is a well-kept secret handed down from generation to generation by the traditional artisan families.
Last month saw the inauguration of a lakeside Yatri Nivas at the village. The motel was inaugurated on August 7, 2000, by Mr. E Chandrasekharan Nair, Minister for Tourism, Food and Law at a special function also attended by Mr. Amitabh Kant, Tourism Secretary and Dr Venu V, the Director of the Department of Tourism. The minister also laid the foundation stone for another Yatri Nivas for pilgrims at Kulanada, close to Aranmula, on the same day.
