The palace used by the Arakkal royal family, who were the former rulers of the region, played an influential role in the history of Kannur and adjoining areas. The palace is in a dilapidated condition, and the main structure, which houses a bell-tower and other structures called ‘Arakkal Kettu’ is badly in need of restoration.

Many versions are there, pertaining to the origin of the Arakkal royal family. It is said that, matrimonial system of decent prevailed in the Arakkal family, with the senior member, male or female becoming the ruler. The male rulers were called Ali Rajah and the female rulers were known as Arakkal Beevis.

The State Government has sanctioned a Rs. 96-lakh project for the renovation and conservation work. The palace complex has interconnected building clusters, comprising residential structures, pandikasalas (warehouses) and mosques around a large open ground.
