With the inauguration of the model
Tourism village in Kumbalangi, Kerala Tourism has given a fresh lease of life to
this small backwater village, near the Kochi city, which had so far remained in
the dark. The inaugural function, which was held on December 23, was presided by
the Minister for Tourism, Prof. K. V. Thomas. Mr. Sompal, the Member of Central
Planning Commission and Central Finance Commission formally inaugurated the
Kumbalangi Integrated Tourism Village project at St. Peter's Higher Secondary
School Ground in Kumbalangi. He also released the brochure for the
project.
The Kumbalangi Tourism Village focuses on protecting and
preserving the natural beauty, bio-diversity and ecological balance of the
location. An amount of Rs. 7.5 million has been spent in Kumbalangi under the
project and Rs. 5.0 million has been allotted by the centre for this purpose.
The project aims to preserve the age-old, magnificent culture and heritage of
the place, at the same time providing more stability to the rural
economy.
Tourism Minister Prof. K. V. Thomas while presiding over the
function said that there was considerable increase in the number of tourists in
Kerala; which is an impressive hike of 30 percent.
The "Kumbalangi
Fest", held as part of this massive project showcased the unique facets of God's
Own Country at its marvellous best. The Festival, which was held between
December 26th and 28th, contained a variety of exhibits reflecting the culture
of Kerala including the traditional Kerala cuisines, the succulent fish
cuisines, fishing equipments and a truly exquisite display of its different
cultural and ritual art forms. The ?Kumbalangi Fest?, offered a fascinating
glimpse of the simple and prosperous livelihood of the villagers of Kumbalangi.
