Alappuzha: Second phase of canal beautification inaugurated
The Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy, said that the Union Government has sanctioned Rs. 80 million for the development project for canals in Alappuzha town, He was inaugurating the second phase of cleaning and beautification works of the canals in Alappuzha. The function followed a country boat pageantry in the canals. The Chief Minister also declared the formation of a committee to oversee the works with the Minister for Tourism as Chairman and the District Collector, Alappuzha as Convenor. The committee also includes ministers and officials of other departments as members. The Minister for Tourism, Mr. K. C. Venugopal presided over the function. Alappuzha would be developed as the best tourism town in the State, Mr. Venugopal said.
The canal development project face many difficulties since approvals of several departments are needed. Mr. Venugopal suggested bringing the canals and banks under a single authority. Mr. K. S. Manoj, MP, Alappuzha and Ms. Lalithamma Somanathan, Municipal Chairperson also attended the function. A lock system to regulate the entry of seawater into the canals was also commissioned by the Chief Minister.
