Kovalam to become an all-time destination

An ambitious project devised by Kerala Tourism would offer tourists from all over the world their dream destination equally charming round the year. The 'Submerged Artificial Surf Reef' proposed by the Kerala Tourism at the Eve's beach is a multipurpose project, which would ensure safety of tourists and protection of the coast. This will boost water sports like boating, water skiing, scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing and wave riding. The Rs. 40.5 million reef project will prevent the erosion of the beach during the monsoon season and would create a wider beach. The Reef will be made using large non- woven geo-textile bags filled with sand. The 500-metre long reef will be set up around 200 metres away from the beach. Placed at a depth of 3-7 metres, it will block waves of more than one metre height. A tranquil basin will be constructed for the smooth plying of fishing boats. The project would be implemented jointly by the Kerala Tourism, Centre for Earth Science Studies and the Department of Harbour. The technology was implemented successfully in different parts of the world including New Zealand, the U.S., the U.K., Australia and Indonesia. The Reefs were found to preserve the ecosystem since it helps the growth of flora and fauna. And good news for fishing community, this would attract more fishes to the place.
