Vellar Arts and Crafts Village Launches ‘Gift a Tradition’ Project

The Kerala Arts and Crafts Village at Vellar near Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram district has launched a ‘Gift a Tradition’ project to give a new lease of life to the traditional handicraft sector, which has been under crisis due to the pandemic.

As part of the project, people can order products from the artisans directly through the craft village’s official website (https://www.kacvkovalam.org/catalogue). Availing of an Onam special offer, they can gift handloom sarees, dhotis, Aranmula Kannadi, Nettoor Petti, Kalpetti and similar traditional craft products to their loved ones through the scheme.

The Tourism Minister Mr. P. A. Mohammed Riyas, who inaugurated the project at the craft village, said traditional handicraft and handloom products created by the artisans of the village could be gifted to the near and dear ones during Onam and it will provide succour to the struggling artisans.

The ‘Gift a Tradition’ project is mainly targeted at Malayali expatriate population. The gifts will be delivered in a beautiful hamper with Onam greetings inscribed in purchaser’s handwriting.

The products will be directly sourced from artisans in the craft village, and there will be no middlemen involved in the project.

Spread across 8.5 acres, the craft village was set up by Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society Ltd (ULCCS Ltd) for the Tourism Department. With its handicraft stalls, ethnic food joints and recreational facilities, the craft village will give a unique experience for travellers as well as shoppers. The craft village has dedicated facilities for traditional artisans to work and market their finished products.
