Idukki, Cheruthoni Dams open to the public till May 31

Given the summer vacation and 50th anniversary of Idukki district, the Idukki and Cheruthoni dams have been thrown open to the public. Travellers can visit on all days, except Wednesdays, between 9:30 am and 5:00 pm till May 31. The entry ticket rate for adults is Rs 40 while for kids it is Rs 20. Travellers can hire buggy cars to travel through the crest of the dam.

Boats which can accommodate a maximum of 20 people are also on offer to explore the Idukki reservoir.

The Idukki Arch Dam is one of the highest arch dams in Asia. A parabolic marvel, the dam greets visitors at the Kuravan and Kurathi hills in Idukki. The site itself is awe-inspiring, considering the sheer magnitude of the structure and the purpose it serves. Nearby lies the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary where one can seek solace in Nature. The Cheruthoni dam being 138 m tall is the largest. Constructed across the Periyar river, Cheruthoni dam is a concrete gravity dam close to the Idukki Arch Dam and is part of the Idukki Hydroelectric project.
