Adventure Tourism Projects Planned at Maruthimala to Boost Eco-Tourism in Kollam
Muttara Maruthimala, a picturesque hilltop in Kollam district, is set to undergo a transformation with the government launching a series of adventure tourism projects aimed at enhancing its appeal as a sustainable travel destination. As part of Kerala’s biodiversity tourism initiative, the state earmarked Rs.3.5 crore for the first phase of development, according to Finance Minister Shri K.N. Balagopal.
The foundational work had already commenced by early May, with the Department of Tourism overseeing the implementation of various infrastructure improvements. The project, approved by the state cabinet, includes the installation of adventure-friendly features such as rock-climbing facilities, a scenic viewing deck and designated parking zones. In addition, visitor amenities like a ticket counter, food kiosks, rest areas and modern toilet blocks are being planned atop the hill.
During his visit to the site, Shri Balagopal highlighted Maruthimala’s potential to evolve into a significant adventure tourism destination in the region. The area’s natural terrain and scenic views make it ideal for eco-tourism and outdoor recreational activities.
A review meeting was held at the site on May 6, attended by Kottarakkara Block Panchayat President Shri A. Abhilash, tourism officials and local representatives. The initiative is not only expected to attract tourists but also to generate employment opportunities and foster economic development in the region.
By focusing on adventure and biodiversity-based tourism, the Maruthimala project underscores Kerala’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive tourism that celebrates its natural heritage while supporting local communities.
