Ezhattumukham and Munambam Selected for Major Tourism Upgrades in Ernakulam District

Published in Newsletter Issue No. 383 - July 2025

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) of Ernakulam moved forward with plans to transform three significant tourist locations in the district. Tenders were floated for the renovation and development of Prakriti Gramam at Ezhattumukham, Beach Park at Munambam, and the Take-a-Break Refreshment Centre at the Ernakulam boat jetty.

The Refreshment Centre at the boat jetty, originally inaugurated in September 2017 as a part of a statewide initiative, had stopped functioning over time. Designed to serve travellers with amenities that include a snack bar, ATM counter, resting and refreshment areas, toilets, and parking, the facility has seen a surge in demand for its reopening. The DTPC invited proposals from interested parties to renovate, upgrade and manage the centre, highlighting its potential as a vital stop for tourists visiting the city.

At Ezhattumukham, Prakriti Gramam had gained popularity as a nature-based attraction, especially among weekend visitors and those en route to Athirappilly. The park, which featured tree houses and the Ezhattumukham-Thumboormuzhi suspension bridge, had experienced deterioration due to lack of maintenance. The new project aims to restore these features, address infrastructure issues and introduce upgraded basic facilities to support the site’s growing footfall.

Munambam’s Beach Park, located in a district known for its vibrant beaches, is also slated for major development. The DTPC plans to position Munambam as a standalone destination by adding new attractions and upgrading existing ones. Proposals include the development of additional water sports, food courts, play areas, upgraded restrooms and activity zones, with the focus on a public-private partnership model to implement the project so as to ensure long-term sustainability.

DTPC officials emphasised that these projects would not only boost tourism revenue but also enhance the overall experience for visitors. By reviving, renovating and developing these sites, Ernakulam district aims to further strengthen its position as a leading tourism destination in Kerala.
