In a landmark moment for tourism in north Kerala, the first phase of the Muzhappilangad-Dharmadam comprehensive beach tourism development project was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan on May 4th at Muzhappilangad, Asia’s longest drive-in beach. It marked the beginning of an ambitious three-phase plan designed to transform the region into a world-class beach tourism hub.
Shri P. A. Mohamed Riyas, Minister, Kerala Tourism, chaired the ceremony, which saw the participation of Dr. V. Sivadasan, Member of Parliament, as chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Shri Vijayan underlined the importance of treating tourists with dignity and offering them memorable experiences that encourage return visits and positive word-of-mouth. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmentally responsible tourism, highlighting Dharmadam Island's role in providing sanctuary to migratory birds.
Minister Shri P. A. Mohamed Riyas noted that the successful execution of this phase demonstrated Kerala’s strategic focus on revitalising the tourism sector in the post-pandemic era, particularly in the Malabar region. He pointed out that the Muzhappilangad–Dharmadam project aimed not only to draw visitors but also to invigorate local economies and communities by enhancing recreational facilities and infrastructure.
The Rs.79.51 crore phase, part of a broader Rs.233.71 crore project funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), was implemented by the Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC). The new additions included a 1.2 km drive-in track, wide pedestrian walkways with concrete platforms, a children's play area, gazebos, kiosks, shaded resting spots, sculptures and decorative lighting.
Smt. Sikha Surendran, Director, Kerala Tourism, in her address, highlighted the project’s significance and the potential of the Muzhappilangad-Dharmadam stretch, which the BBC had recently ranked among the world’s top six beaches for driving. The picturesque Dharmadam Island, surrounded by the Arabian Sea and rivers on three sides, added to the project’s visual appeal and ecological value.
