Drive four kilometres South of from Varkala railway station and you will reach Melvettoor. A three-km drive towards left of this road will take you to a placid place with a picturesque view of the lake and that is, Akathumuri.

The calm lake attracts a lot of coromants and cranes, depending on the season and you can have a ride on these placid waters in a country boat.  There is a small coir making unit at Akathumuri and you can watch the coir being made there. You can reach Kulavattom if you cross travel through the boat a few kilometres, and this place is also known for its tranquillity and a view of placid waters. The place is a haven for birds and you can see a lot of birds such as herons, kingfishers and kites. This is an island which emerges only when the water recedes and it is a favourite spot of tourists.
