Chirayinkeezhu

Chirayinkeezhu is an important taluk in Trivandrum district and it is situated about 13 km from Varkala. It is here the Vamanapuram River and the Anchuthengu backwater meets. The name of the place was derived from its proximity to the lake (Chira in Malayalam means `backwaters’ and keezhu was used to indicate east). Though earlier the place was well connected to other parts of Trivandrum through waterways, later the advent of road and rail facilities diminished the value of the waterways. The Sarkara Devi Temple, famous for the kaliyoot festival, is situated at Chirayinkeezhu. The famous "Anjengo fort" (Anchutengu kotta) is on the way from Chirayinkil to Varkala via Kadakkavoor. Chirayinkeezhu has given birth to the evergreen hero of Malayalam film industry Prem Nazir, Bharath Gopi another well known film actor is also from Chirayinkeezhu.
