The Festival of New Beginnings

Vishu marks the Solar New Year in Kerala and is a celebration of hope, prosperity, and fresh beginnings. Observed with deep cultural significance, the festival usually falls in mid-April, heralding the arrival of spring and the harvest season. The Solar New Year, often known in India as Mesha Sankranti, is an astronomical New Year based on the solar calendar, usually falling on April 13th or 14th annually.

The highlight of Vishu is the Vishukkani—an auspicious arrangement of items such as rice, fruits, vegetables, golden cucumber, betel leaves, flowers, coins, and a mirror, all placed before an image of Lord Krishna. It is believed that seeing this sacred arrangement first thing in the morning brings good fortune for the year ahead.

Festivities also include the giving of Vishukkaineetam (gifts of money) by elders to younger members, the bursting of firecrackers, and the preparation of a grand feast known as Vishu Sadya, featuring a variety of traditional Kerala dishes.
