Pazhassi Raja was the last ruler in this region who revolted strongly against the British rule after the fall of Tipu Sultan. He waged guerrilla warfare against the British and the dense forests of Wayanad gave him refuge and they later turned out to be the centre of his guerrilla war tactics. The British army finally defeated him in 1805 in an encounter at Mavilanthodu near Pulpally. There is a tomb situated in Mavilanthodu where he was cremated. The place is about 1 km from Mananthavady and the tourists can also visit a structure situated nearby that houses his memorabilia.
