Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS)

One of the major institutions situated in Wayanad is the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) at Ambalavayal town. It is part of the Kerala Agricultural University and the institute mainly contributes to the research needs of agriculture sector of the high ranges. It mainly conducts research on spices, tropical and sub tropical fruits, vegetables and hill paddy.

Tourists are allowed to have a visit to the RARS nursery. If you are a gardening enthusiast, you will be amazed by the large collection of rare roses and ornamental plants there. Various hues of flowers welcome you once you enter the nursery. RARS also produces many varieties of seeds and quality saplings for distribution among farmers. You can purchase seeds and planting materials at the sales counter there.

RARS also caters to one of the important needs of agriculture sector that is, making farmers aware of the latest technologies. Krishi Vignan Kedra, working with an objective of disseminating the latest technologies to farmers, is attached to RARS and its contribution to the agriculture sector has received wide recognition from the public.

RARS also contributes to the large scale production of tissue culture plants of high value crops.  The Biotechnology Centre here conducts research and works towards this objective.
