Kadathanadan Kalari Sangam, Wayanad

Mr V. Sreenivasan Gurukkal, Mr Raghavan Gurukkal, Mr Dhamu Gurukkal and Mr Valappil Karunan Gurukkal established Kadathanadan Kalari Sangam at Vadakara in Kozhikode district in Kerala in 1949. Sreenivasan Gurukkal shifted to Wayanad in 1962 and started teaching Kalaripayattu there. Later in 2000, Mr K. F. Thomas Gurukkal started Kalari in its current location in 2000.

We now have 3 branches in Wayanad managed by five Gurukkals, namely Thomas Gurukkal, Ganesh Gurukkal, Sreejith Gurukkal, Nishad Gurukkal and Anoop Gurukkal. We have taught Kalaripayattu to more than 5,000 people. This Kalari has been blessed enough to pass this ancient wisdom onto the students who come from all over the world. We have had students from 40+ countries across all ages and genders. Our oldest students so far were 68 years old ladies from Germany and Namibia.

In 2013, our Kalari was even visited by Okinawa Karate Grandmaster Hanshi Tesuo Taka Miyagi. He gave classes to a number of instructors and trainees.

This Kalari was also covered by a France TV channel team for their documentary.

We provide many services including traditional Kalaripayattu training, beginner and advanced yoga, Kalari treatment, Kalari massage, daily Kalaripayattu show for tourists, Kalari meditation, Pranayama, Yogic diet etc.

The Kalari is located in a small agricultural village. It’s surrounded by a vast organic farm which is home to plantations of all sorts of vegetables and fruits like banana, pineapple, passion fruit, jack fruit including coffee and cocoa. The farm also has animals like cows, horses, goats, fish, dogs etc. A perfect blend of flora and fauna.

We also prepare our own Kalari oil which the students apply to their bodies before Kalari practice. For Kalari massage also, this same oil is used.
