Herds of Deer, Sambar, Bison and Gaur can be seen walking up to the water in their own ever changing grazing spots. Elephants, playing around in the mud, greet all visitors from the outskirts of the forest line. One can hear the occasional roar dispel the stillness of the night. Once you enter Periyar, either by land or water, you're greeted by almost every possible species discovered by man to this date.
For centuries, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady has been host to the most exquisite flora and fauna in the country and nature lovers throng to it in great numbers. Famous for its rustic and refreshing climate along with a bird's eye view of a multitude of life forms, it is among the best tourist spots in God's Own Country.
Named after the River Periyar that originates from its dense forests, its history revolves around the opening of the Mullaperiyar Dam over a century ago. The current area came into being in 1950 when the area under the forests of Rattendon Valley and Mount Plateau was deemed as Periyar Reserve Land. Today, tours and boat rides begin at dawn, when one can view an entire forest waking up, in person. This is among the best Tiger Reserves in the country as well.
Eco-tourism forms an integral part of the ethos of Periyar. Nature walks, Cloud walks, Border Trekking, Bamboo Rafting, Bullock Cart Rides and Tiger Trails are important flagship activities at the park. Trained tribal guides take you amidst the famous evergreen forests, using their specialised knowledge of these parts to the utmost. It is among the most invigorating experiences available in the State, with a new facet of its beauty opening up to you on every visit.
