Shopping in Kumily

The best buys in Kumily are, of course, the spices. The spices of Kumily are famed for their aromatic flavour and for their culinary value. Commonly sold in compact, transparent packets, their aroma and freshness make them an irresistible buy. Various products made with spices like spice chocolates, spiced preserves and specialty teas and coffees are also available.

Apart from these, this small market town, with its colorful shops, has on offer garden-fresh fruits and vegetables, many varieties of beautiful flowers, jute and bamboo products, fine quality fenugreek, the popular banana chips known as Kerala chips, traditional pickles of Kerala etc.

Kumily also offers gorgeous handloom fabrics. Apart from the traditional handloom of Kerala, handloom from those of other states like Gujarat, Kashmiri etc also available here. Many traders from North India have set up stores here to sell their silk and their regional handloom.

Many antique items are also on display for sale including traditional lamps, household utensils, kitchenware, furniture and so on. Handcrafted items like rosewood and sandalwood sculptures, batiks etc find many takers at the Kumily market. The Kashmiri emporiums set up here sell  white or light-coloured costumes and material which have their characteristic simple but elegant embroidery.

For snacks, T-Shirts, books on the wildlife etc, you could visit Café Periyarensis, run by the Periyar Wildlife Staff Co-operative Society .
