Roads: Idukki has no direct rail or air connections. Road network of around 8,000 km is the only available option for travel. NH-49, the National Highway connecting Kochi and Madura passes through the district. Idukki has the distinction of being the ‘power district’ in the state for it produces about seventy percent of the total electricity generated in the state. Idukki houses Pallivasal hydroelectric project, the first of its kind in the state, and also Idukki project, the largest in the state. Besides these, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) manages many hydroelectric projects in the state. They include Sengulam, Neriyamangalam, Panniyar and Lower Periyar hydroelectric projects.
