Kovalam and Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram are popular open sea spots while Kadavanthara, Kaloor in Kochi offer more controlled spots. Scuba diving is popular along the Kadamakudy Island too. The visual treat varies too. For example, dives at Kovalam reveal schools of reef fish, underwater rock canyons, and sand beds, while sites near Varkala provide views of natural sea formations shaped by tides over the years. Kochi’s waters, influenced by its coastal geography, provide a distinct diving environment.

The diving season typically runs from October to April, after the monsoon. During this period, the sea is relatively calmer, with more stable conditions and improved visibility. Diving activities are suspended during the monsoon due to rough seas and strong currents.
The majority of diving operators in Kerala offer introductory "try dives" to those who have never dived before and also have advanced dives for licensed divers. These activities are done in eco-friendly protected marine areas, and the operators are required to follow the regulations set by the tourism and coastal authorities. It might be necessary to have a prior booking and medical declaration, especially if you are planning to dive deeper or take advanced diving courses. Moreover, dives take place only when the sea is calm.
