What makes Kerala a unique trekking destination in India is that its diverse range of trails lies along the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the mountain range running along much of the state, these trails move through forests, ridges, and high-altitude paths, adding a sense of depth and adventure to the experience.
Though there are trekking spots in every district in Kerala, the most popular ones are in Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad, Idukki, and Palakkad districts. The six national parks in the state - Anamudi Shola, Eravikulam, Mathikettan Shola, Pampadum Shola, Periyar, and Silent Valley - house the majority of the tracks.
The biodiversity hotspot is home to thousands of endemic flora and fauna. Trekkers can enjoy mesmerising views of the lush green forests, wildlife, fertile farms, misty summits and tea plantations, depending on the type of track they are on. For example, treks through Thekkady in Idukki will offer you glimpses of the wildlife like elephants, bison, monkeys, exotic birds and more. In Munnar, you can walk the tea trails on the vast hilly plantations, enjoying the scenic views and learning how the famous beverage ingredient is made.
The trekking season in Kerala begins in October after the end of the monsoon and ends in March. Recently, a few spots have been earmarked for monsoon treks. The slippery tracks and unpredictable weather makes it tough but thrilling. These treks must only be done under the supervision of experienced guides
The 450km stretch of the Western Ghats, starting from Kasargod district in the north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south, offers varied trekking experiences, ranging from moderate to difficult. There are exclusive tracks like the Agastyarkoodam trek in Thiruvananthapuram, which is only open for a month every year. Most of the other spots are accessible throughout the season, barring adverse weather conditions.
Since the locales are on an environmentally sensitive geographic location, the trekking tracks are under the jurisdiction of the state’s Forest and Wildlife departments. So, certain treks will require prior bookings and permissions from the concerned departments.
