A gentle wave rising and folding over itself is nothing new along Kerala’s coast. But a surfer moving through it still makes you pause. It is recent, still taking shape, and slowly becoming part of the coastline.

Unlike more crowded surf destinations, many beaches in Kerala offer a more relaxed setting. Beginners can learn at their own pace, while experienced surfers can enjoy longer, uninterrupted rides. The coastline itself is varied, with cliffside beaches and calm river mouths where sandy bottoms create softer, more manageable waves, especially in the months after the monsoon.

With qualified instructors, foam boards, and structured lessons, first-timers can quickly find their balance and experience the excitement of their first ride. And schools are coming up in different parts of the state.

The majority of surfing ventures have been limited to places such as Varkala, Kovalam, and a few beaches in North Kerala. Comfort and safety of the surfers are guaranteed in these places, as they have stable waves, easy entry points, and a good number of surf schools and cafés, which provide a relaxed surf-town vibe. Morning and late afternoon are the times that are mostly chosen for the lessons, as the wind is usually calm and conditions are favorable. Whether you are doing it once or signing up for a surf camp, safety, gradual coaching, and love for the ocean are the only things kept in mind.

The main surfing season in Kerala is from October to April, i.e., after the southwest monsoon period. The ocean is usually calm and suitable for surfing, with the waves not being too high and the visibility good. Monsoon months are not good for surfing lessons because of rough seas, strong currents, and unstable weather. Reputed surf schools operate with certified instructors, safety briefings, and proper equipment checks before each session, making the experience accessible even for non-swimmers in shallow, supervised areas.

Most of the operators provide beginner-level 'learn to surf' sessions, multi-day courses, and guided sessions for intermediate riders. In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the case of weekends, holidays, and the peak season, it is definitely better to reserve a place beforehand. Also, in the case of longer sessions or surf camps, you may be asked to show that you have basic fitness and a medical certificate. Surfing takes place only when the instructors deem the sea safe, and the hours may vary depending on the tide and wind.

Tips

Safety

First‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ of all, it is very essential to listen to and comprehend your instructor when he is giving an explanation about flag systems, rip currents, and safe ways of falling.

Use Approved Operators

In order to be sure that there are professionally trained instructors and that the equipment is of high quality, choose surf schools that have been approved by Kerala Tourism or recognized.

Match Your Level

You can choose to attend beginner lessons or advanced sessions depending on how confident you are in the water and what your previous surf experience has been.

Plan Ahead

It will be very hard to find a place on weekends and during the peak season; hence, you need to pre-book your spot and confirm your timing a day ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌before.
