This year, Kozhikode will be at the heart of Kerala’s Onam festivities with the launch of Maavelikas, an ambitious eight-day celebration designed to highlight the unique spirit and cultural diversity of Malabar. The festival, organised by the Kerala Arts and Crafts Village in association with the State Tourism Department and Oneiro Strategists, was officially unveiled by Shri P. A. Mohamed Riyas, Minister, Kerala Tourism. The announcement event saw popular rapper Vedan joining as the Chief Guest, symbolising the event’s blend of tradition and modernity.

Maavelikas will unfold from August 31 to September 7 across eight prominent venues, including Chaliyam, Kozhikode Beach, Mananchira and Sargaalaya. The festival promises an eclectic mix of international and local talent, with performances by acclaimed artists such as Sid Sriram, Manganiyar Seduction, and Cubo, as well as curated musical evenings featuring celebrated musicians and dance performances by film stars. Audiences can look forward to a vibrant showcase of traditional art forms, eclectic musical fusions, contemporary dance and theatre, making for a unique cultural mosaic of experiences.

Beyond the stage, Maavelikas will feature a floral carpet competition involving all Panchayat regions in the district, turning the city into a colourful floral tapestry of tradition. A multi-cuisine food festival celebrating Malabar’s culinary riches alongside dishes from other regions, and a grand Onam feast curated by seven chefs over seven days, promise to delight food aficionados.

Another highlight of the festival is an International Book Fair held as a tribute to renowned writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair. The festivities are further enhanced by exhibitions and fairs with tourism stalls representing different states and sales of handloom and handicraft products, art installations, and creative workshops. Additionally, a business conclave will also be held to promote Malabar’s investment prospects.

With Maavelikas, Kozhikode is set to transform into a vibrant hub of culture, art and festivity, inviting both locals and tourists alike to savour the very best of Kerala’s Onam traditions through Malabar’s rich and dynamic cultural landscape.
