June to August is the best time of the year for bird watching. Migratory birds in huge numbers visit the sanctuary from November to February; avid bird lovers also flock to the sanctuary during the time.
A cruise in a houseboat or motorboat through Lake Vembanad or along River Kavanar offers great views of the birds. Flocks of birds flying across the lake during the morning hours is a beautiful sight. If you prefer to walk, an early morning walk along the one-and-a-half km long walkway into the sanctuary is the best option.
