Varkala stands apart along Kerala’s coast, where laterite cliffs rise sharply above the sea, making it one of the few cliff-backed beaches in the state. Along stretches such as Varkala Beach and nearby Black Beach, the coastline opens out to waves that are generally gentle to moderate, making them suitable for both beginners and more experienced surfers.
Surfing here follows a gradual progression. Sessions often begin on the shore, where basic techniques are introduced, before moving into waist-deep water under the guidance of instructors. The sandy seabed in many parts helps create softer, more manageable breaks, allowing learners to build confidence steadily.
Early mornings are typically the best time to surf, when the wind is lighter and the sea is more settled. At this time, the waves tend to be longer and smoother, offering a more consistent ride along the coast.
