Apart from farming that includes paddy and vegetable cultivation, fishery is an important small-scale industry for the farmers of Kumarakom. There are many farmers who grow fishes like the Pearl Spot and the carp in their ponds that may be up to a few acres wide. A wide variety of cattle like the Jamna Pari goat and the Kasaragodan cow have also been bred here. The farming of poultry including a variety of hens, ducks and so on is also carried out.
The farmers, who make it a point to use environment-friendly methods, have an integrated approach to cultivation and livestock farming. This helps them to reduce risks.
