Mariamma Kurien of the Cheppannakkari House in Kumarakom is known as ‘Kandal Ammachi’ - the mother of mangrove forests. It was for preserving the boundaries of her property, which is near a canal, that she first started growing mangroves. In the process of looking after her mangroves, she learned about the relevance of mangrove forests in preserving the ecological balance of the land. Thereafter, she began to distributing free seeds to anyone who approached her.
In time, her efforts were recognized by society. Scientists and researchers used to visit her property to study the mangrove forests. She looked after the forests that she grew near her compound for about 50 years. The remarkable lady died in 2009.
