In 1903, Sree Narayana Guru, the great social reformer, who fought against caste prejudices in Hinduism, consecrated an idol of Lord Subrahmanya at Kumarakom. The idol became the deity of the Sree Kumaramangalam temple.
The festival at the temple is held on Pooyam day in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (usually in March). Apart from the rituals, a number of cultural programs including performances of. Nadaswaram, Ottan thullal, Amman kudam, Kavadi and Garuda Nruttam are held.
