Thaikkattu Mooss

The Thaikkattu Mooss family and the ancient healthcare wisdom of Ayurveda have become an inseparable entity in the traditional healthcare systems of Kerala. The family has to its credit many accomplished ayurveda physicians in the past and in the present. Their excellence in mastering the art and science of Ayurveda were acknowledged by rulers and noble men in the past by availing of their services. The Thaikkattu Mooss family's saga of success starts with the modern period, when the Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala (ayurveda pharmacy) got established in the year 1941 which has now become the world famous Ashtavaidyan Thaikkattu Mooss Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala situated at Ollur in the district of Thrissur. (Oushadhasala means pharmacy). The establishment of the pharmacy was a milestone in the progressive endeavours of the Thaikkattu Mooss family. Keeping the tradition of the family in Ayurveda, the exceptional commitment as a physician and as a propagator of Ayurveda soon made Ashtavaidyan Neelakandhan Mooss, son of Ashtavaidyan Narayanan Mooss as one of the best ayurvedic physicians in the country. (There are two legendary beliefs; According to one Ashtavaidyans (Ashta means eight) are those who hail from eight reputed families of Ayurveda physicians in Kerala. Another version says that these Ashtavaidyans are those who have mastered the eight branches of the Ayurvedic system of medicine.) The Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala founded by him is renowned for the quality in preparation and distribution of ayurvedic medicines. The pharmacy adhere to the strict guidelines as prescribed in the original authoritative texts on Ayurveda like the Ashtangahrudayam, Sahasrayogam, Charakasamhita etc. and does not deviate from it for paltry business advantages of any kind. The stellar role played by Ashtavaidyan Neelakandhan Mooss in developing the ayurveda pharmacy into a center of excellence was duly acknowledged by the Central Government and was honoured with the prestigious national award, the Padmasri in the year 1992. Vaidyaratnam Nursing Home was the next in line as yet another contribution from the Thaikkattu Mooss family, which was also realized by none other than Ashtavaidyan Neelakandhan Mooss. This was soon followed by the establishment of Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College and Ayurvedic Reasearch Centre. These were all part of the concerted effort of the Thaikkattu Mooss family to make Ayurveda reach a wider section of people and also for making available the very best and authentic treatment methods and medicines. Successive generations too lived up to the demanding tasks of the Thaikkattu Mooss family. Their establishments were all set for accommodating modern views and approaches through Ashtavaidyan Neelakandhan Mooss' son E. T. Narayanan Mooss. By 1954 with the reigns held firm in the hands of E. T. Narayanan Mooss, the establishment became an icon in the field of Ayurveda treatment, and has by now grown in stature and size. The pharmacy of late employs latest technology and manufacturing methods, which has enhanced its capacity to meet the desired quality of ayurvedic remedies. State-of-the-art methods are utilized for selection, cleaning, processing and storage of herbs and raw materials and also in the production and preservation of medicines. Besides the classical ayurvedic medicinal preparations, the Thaikkattu Mooss family also have certain proprietary formulations, which are effective remedies, the know-how of which have been written down on palm leaves, which are safe guarded and well preserved. Some of these products are now in the process of being patented and most of these proprietary formulations would soon be made popular for the benefit of humanity. In the year 1997, E. T. Narayanan Mooss was awarded the coveted Swadeshi Puraskar instituted by the Swadeshi Jagaran Foundation in recognition to his outstanding contribution to Ayurveda. He was also the recipient of the Akshaya Award in the year 1999. As of now the ayurveda pharmacy transformed into one of the largest manufacturers of ayurvedic medicines, with a sales network all over Kerala and in other parts of India. Keeping the aspirations of their forefathers in high esteem, the sons of E. T. Narayanan Mooss; Ashtavaidyan E. T. Neelakandhan Mooss and Ashtavaidyan E. T. Parameswaran Mooss also see to it that the efforts and visions of the Thaikkattu Mooss family are always directed towards excellence and commitment that they have maintained so far in the field of Ayurveda, and are keen to pass that spirit to the generations to come. The Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala owing to its quality standards has been given the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and also the ISO 9001:2000 certification. On quality, the Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala is dedicated to provide cost effective quality ayurvedic medicines, and ensures complete satisfaction of medical practitioners and patients with keen interest in improving the quality of the products and services continually.
