Rice Cultivation in Kumarakom

Though a large variety of vegetables are cultivated in the village, paddy fields cover almost half of the total area. Rice cultivation here is laborious including many steps such as draining the fields and creating bunds.

The village, like any other in Kuttanad, lies below sea-level and two crops are planted in a year – Viruppu (Kharif) cultivated between May and September and Punja (Rabi), cultivated between November and March.
