Kerala Institute of Travel and Tourism Studies (KITTS) and Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala in association with the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have organized a three day International Symposium on Tourism and Livelihood from 31 May 2011 to 2 June 2011.

The technical session of the symposium commenced with the address by Dr. Harold Goodwin, Director of ICRT, Leeds Metropolitan University and Dr. Venu V., Secretary Kerala Tourism on the global and Indian scenario on the symposium theme "Tourism and Livelihood."

Selected case studies within the state of Kerala were presented at the symposium followed by panel discussions on roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders on tourism acting as a catalyst for the socio-economic development of the local community creating more livelihood opportunities by way of local sourcing, promoting local enterprises and providing local employment.

KITTS came out with a publication "Tourism and Livelihood - Selected Experiences from Kerala" in this context. The RT initiatives of Kerala Tourism and importance of education and capacity building also were discussed in the symposium. The participants included policy makers, industry professionals, elected members, local bodies, academicians and NGOs who contributed significantly to the symposium theme.

The case studies conducted as part of this symposium revealed that there were good examples of community involvement and livelihood generation practiced by the tourism industry in the state.
