Payyanur

Payyanur

Payyanur, about 45 kms from Kannur, played a remarkable role in the freedom struggle of the country. It was the main venue of the Salt Satyagraha in Kerala in the year 1930.

The place is considered special for its various historical, religious and natural attractions. To name a few - its unexplored beaches and backwaters, the highly revered Subrahmanya temple, the Payyanur Pavithra Mothiram (a ring crafted like a knot) and so on. The ring is considered a sacred ornament and is worn during many Hindu religious rituals.

The place is also regarded as a centre of Astrology.
