Vadakara

Vadakara, about 48 kms from Kozhikode, boasts of a rich martial arts tradition. It was an ancient centre of trade and commerce. Vadakara is renowned as the birthplace of Thacholi Othenan, the legendary hero of the Vadakkan pattukal " the ballads of North Malabar. Thacholi Manikkoth or the arena, where Othenan practised his martial feats, attracts many visitors.

Vadakara was originally known as Vadakkekara (the place lying to the north of the river). This was later shortened to Vadakara. The river referred to flows through the area and is known by various names like Moorad, Kuttiadi and Kottakkal. 

Lokanarkavu

Lokanarkavu temple in Vadakara is closely associated with the valiant heroes and heroines of Vadakkan Pattukal. In these northern ballads, honouring the heroism of Thacholi Othenan, Unniyarcha and many others, the temple is referred to many times. The temple, also known as Thacholi Manikoth Kavu temple, is simple in structure and elegant in appearance. Its legendary aura is the chief reason for its popularity. The murals and carvings here are a delight to art connoisseurs. The main deity is Lokanarkavilamma or Goddess Durga. The temple festival falls in March/April.
