Quilandy

Quilandy

Quilandy, earlier known as Panthalayini Kollam, used to be a major trade centre that enjoyed trade links with the Greeks, Arabs, Chinese, and Romans. Some historians believe that it was at Quilandy that Vasco da Gama landed in 1498.

According to some historians, Pandalayini Kollam is the place where Malik Ibn Dinar built the second mosque in Malabar, after the one at Kodungallur. A mosque can still be seen here with a number of graves, believed to be those of the followers of Malik Ibn Dinar. The unusual length of the graves is likely to catch everyone's attention. Some of them are longer than 10 feet.

A fishing harbour and an international sports school, the Usha School of Athletics run by former sprint queen P. T. Usha are also located in Quilandy.
