The Thiruvalathoor Bhagavathi temple located in Palakkad is known for its exquisite woodwork and stone sculptures. The temple has 4000 stone lamps fixed on the outer walls, providing a spectacular visual treat when lit at night. Another attraction is the huge mizhavu (a percussion instrument) seen inside the temple, which is said to be the biggest existing specimen of its kind.
Interesting myths are told about the history of this ancient temple, one of which is that it was built by the gods in one day and left unfinished. The temple has two main deities, Mahishasuramardhini and Annapoorneswari. The temple is open on all days with pujas conducted in the morning and evening.
